I can’t help but gag every time one of your commercials comes on the air. Not only is the “and trust me, she’ll like it too” phrase gross, but it also assumes the heteronormativity of your audience, which invalidates the identities and lived experiences of nonbinary genders and sexualities. What about your gay, lesbian, and trans viewers? What about intersex individuals? Your commercials also sexualize women and represent women’s pleasure as secondary to, and dependent on, men’s. Why is there not an equally prevalent version of this product for women? This omission shows how men’s sexual dysfunction is framed as biological or physiological, while women’s sexual problems are blamed on psychological factors, following the female deficit model. It also demonstrates the lack of gender diversity in research, as nearly 99% of past research in psychology assumes the gender binary (that includes your’s).
